Dry Eye Disease
Restorative Biosciences
is currently developing a prescription therapeutic for Chronic Dry Eye
(keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Dry Eye affects over 30 million people in
America and is growing at a double digit rate. It is estimated that Dry
Eye product sales for prescription-based and OTC exceed $500 million annually.
In healthy eyes, normal tear production
protects the surface of the eye and keeps it properly lubricated. The
tear film is a complex mixture of water, fatty oils, proteins, electrolytes,
bacteria-fighting substances and growth factors all interacting to allow
smooth functioning and clear vision. As the tear film destabilizes, a
stinging, burning, itchy and general dryness feeling arises in the eye.
The cause of this tear imbalance is inflammation. The inflammation response
can be brought on by medications and other environmental stresses.
Restorative Biosciences'
pilot product targets this underlying inflammation in the lacrimal glands
and corneal surface thus increasing tear production while simultaneously
restoring the tear film on the cornea. In the first few minutes, over
95% of typical OTC Dry Eye therapeutics wash away. Restorative Biosciences'
product is able to persist on the surface allowing time for tear film
restoration.
Ophthalmic Medical Device Coatings
Restorative Biosciences
has recently entered a development agreement that will initially focus
on device coatings for the ophthalmic medical device market. The technology
works by halting the underlying inflammatory and bacterial causes of these
device failures. Contact lens, surgical, refractive surgical, and dry
eye applications will be targeted with these ongoing developments.
Additional Applications
As Restorative Biosciences'
therapeutics and medical device coatings technologies advance, additional
areas with pathologies rooted in inflammation are being pursued. These
areas include medical device coatings for non-ophthalmic chronic implants
and therapies for cardiovascular disease and cancer.
